What is a Retractable Lifeline?

Secondary Fall Protection

A retractable lifeline is a fall-arresting device used in conjunction with other components of a complete fall-arrest system. It operates by automatically locking and stopping a person’s descent within a short distance after the onset of an accidental fall.

Key Point:
A retractable lifeline should only be used by one person at a time.

Where Should Retractable Lifelines Be Used?

Consider using RLLs in areas where fall hazards are significant, such as:

  • Roofs and scaffolds
  • Tanks, towers, and vessels
  • Manholes
  • Vertical fixed ladders
  • Telescoping derricks

Pre-Use Checklist

Before using a retractable lifeline, supervisors and users must confirm:

  • Has the user been trained to use the RLL correctly?
  • Is the RLL part of a complete fall-arrest system?
  • Is the equipment under a regular maintenance program?

Important Safety Considerations

  • Direct Connection: Attach self-retracting lifelines directly to the dorsal D-ring of the harness. Never connect to a lanyard.
  • Anchorage: Do not use fiber rope for anchorage points.
  • Secure Attachment: Use shackles or carabiners to attach devices to anchorage points.
  • Proper Storage: Hang equipment by the anchorage point or store loosely in a clean, dry area.

Why Choose Retractable Lifelines?

Retractable lifelines provide mobility, ease of use, and enhanced safety for workers in high-risk environments. When properly inspected, maintained, and installed, they are a reliable safeguard against falls.
