10.1 Pathways

  • Surface: Must be non-slippery.
  • Width: Minimum of 75 cm.
  • Strength: Should support the intended load safely.

10.2 Gangways

  • Construction: Properly built with adequate width.
  • Planks (if used):
    • Laid parallel to the gangway’s length.
    • Fastened securely to prevent displacement.
    • Must be uniform in thickness.
    • Fitted with cleats for safe footing.
  • Obstruction: Kept clear of excavated materials or any hindrance.
  • Suspended Pathways/Gangways:
    • Must have guardrails and side supports to prevent falls into the excavation.

10.3 Ladders

  • Quantity:
    • Hazardous Work: At least one ladder per 15 m of excavation length (or fraction thereof).
    • Less Hazardous Work: At least one ladder per 30 m of excavation length (or fraction thereof).
  • Extension: Must extend at least 1 meter above the top edge of the excavation for easy access.
  • Standards: Should be constructed, used, maintained, and inspected as per IS 3696 (Part 2): 1991.
